A Land Flowing with Butterflies
by Lee S. Kohman
. . .like bubbles gone berserk in obedience to wind’s whim, or cottonwoods casting off blooms of fluff beneath cumulus quilts being shaken out, these are the days the caper whites, tissue-light, take flight — a mesmeric migration, a pre-curse to plenty. I stand by the mealy sage and lantana, see flour-dusted heads sip-stop-land — dunking drinking-proboscis down sweet then lifting, looping in clumsy drifting climb to reach roof-ridge and comb through palm tines, then hasten east and pair amid fluttering silver oak leaves. this is the sixth day of stream after stream of breathtaking breakable beauty. in a weary-of-wanting land, hearts now faint from profusion — the flow ‘s so full it twirls, bursting banks scattering joy skyward into the silence heard by those dazzled and drowzed by the dance of butterflies without end amen.
Formerly inhabiting Durham, NC, Lee recently moved to Nairobi, Kenya with her husband and three daughters. She teaches her beautiful girls at home and enjoys glimmers of God through nature, stories, friendship and chasing words onto the page. She loves to laugh and make merry and participates regularly in some seriously silly antics. Her work has recently appeared in Heart of Flesh Literary Journal.
