Lenten Sonnet | February 26, 2018
by Andrew Peterson
The sun is rising sooner now, the light Encroaching on the dark with every turn The planet makes. It dances in the night Among the moon and stars. Again I learn What I forgot: that winter cannot hold Forever, not with all the fire that bends Across the airless reaches—miles untold Of nothing, nothing, nothing—to the winds Of Tennessee the warmth that wakes the trees. The winter cannot hold. Today I knelt Beside the bushes where the berries grow And felt the sun upon my neck, I felt The light seep in and knew what angels know: That God is coming slowly like the spring. The universe will know the quickening.

"The winter cannot hold" carries nice resonance as a sort of inversion of Yeats' famously bleak line "The center cannot hold" (from "The Second Coming").
At first I didn't notice the "extra" unrhymed 15th line (line 9).
The meter is nicely done in this poem.
Wow. Amazing!
