Sandburg--misunderstood writer, poet, musician, storyteller. "Chicago," this vibrant turn-of-the-century city, could have been a song, like ones penned by Bob Dylan in his rough, smokey, contemplative way. Sandburg shared his world and we are still enriched by it.

This could describe so many cities now—Seattle, Baltimore, Detroit, etc—that I feel like it honestly could describe genuine modern patriotism. There’s so much grit and grime and heaving struggle, but under it all is a pulsing sense of what it means to be American. It’s a weakening pulse, but it’s there still for a lot of people. This also made me think of Mike Rowe.

Read this after hearing the recent number of shootings and deaths from gunshots last weekend. Now it’s Saturday…oh God give us the head and heart of the poets and the hands of the only one that can bring peace to the bloodshed.
