Thanks everyone! I wrote this eleven years ago at Canadian L’Abri, where we weren’t allowed wifi and smartphones weren’t yet ubiquitous. I miss those days! Hiking trips in the wilderness still bring me back to that wonder and curiosity.
This is utterly wonderful... a meditation on the value of silent wonder in a world overinformed. Thank you, Liz, for breathing that thought into words.
There was such a time, and all was fine with the world. Now many think we could not live without it. Well, we have done it for the most part of our history. Life was not less peasant or interesting then. But now, look how miserable many young people are. So we do not need the internet to be happy. It is a disaster for many people.
What a lovely poem--beautiful imagery, thoughtful insights, a calming rhythm.
Yes, what they said ☝🏾

"Hackled" is a great word
"Pipe-smoke crocheted..." - phenomenal!
The assonance and consonance here beautifully emphasize the setting's peace. Thank you for this eye-opener.
Gorgeous, thank you, Liz!

“We searched our separate lexicons,
fell silent in the lack.” Lovely and stilling work in this poem!
I knew as soon as the title hit my inbox that I'd love this poem. All I can add is an "amen" to the other comments here.
